CONTESTANTS HIGHLIGHT CITY OF ALPINE IN 7TH ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
The City of Alpine has announced the winners of the 2018 #AlpineTXPhoto Contest. Free and open to the public, the contest closed to entries on September 30th. The seventh annual photo contest saw over 360 photographs submitted by 109 photographers.
Photographers throughout the region and beyond were asked to capture the city of Alpine in a personal, reflective way to reveal the personality of the area. The contest judge for 2018 was Marfa- and Dallas-based photographer Jennifer Boomer, known for her work in Texas Monthly, The Wall Street Journal and WIRED magazine. Most recently, Boomer opened the Marfa Photo gallery & studio in partnership with Lesley Villarreal.
The H.L. Kokernot, Jr. Memorial Award, which includes a $500 cash prize, was won by Shelby Cox’s “Cut & Brand: Working Cattle on a Ranch East of Alpine”. “This image has tremendous personality and appeal,” said Chris Ruggia, the contest administrator and Alpine’s Director of Tourism, “It shows a scene of ranch work with echoes into the past while the young man in the foreground and the modern composition of the photograph look forward to a new generation. It also shows a high degree of craft, pulling the eye through the different levels of the image by playing areas of color intensity and sharp versus soft focus against each other.”
The 2nd place photo prize, the Charles Henry Trost Memorial Award ($100 cash), was taken by Carolyn Morehead’s “Alpine Milky Way”. Ruggia commented, “Carolyn’s photo offers a beautiful expanse of the Big Bend’s legendary dark skies while the windmill anchors the viewer with an icon of the rural landscape.”
The remaining contest winners were “The Desk” by Alfonso Anaya, “LOVE 2” by Catherine Lenz and “Saddle Gravy” by Brandt Buchanan, all receiving $50 cash prizes.
“The contest entries this year where at a very high level of quality overall,” Ruggia concluded. “We are incredibly grateful to all of the talented photographers who continue to share their images and support the contest. I don’t think our judges ever have a very easy task.” All of the winners, finalists and entrants of the #AlpineTXPhoto Contest are available for viewing on the City of Alpine’s visitor information web site: visitalpinetx.com
